docuble.com is a controlled editing environment that lets multiple people collaborate on documents: keep track of revisions, request comments from other people, share editing responsibilities, and so on.

The short answer: We saw a need and filled it -- while there are systems available that allow collaboration and group editing, none of them really work for complex, structured documents.

The longer answer... to quote Larry Wall, the three great virtues of a programmer are laziness, impatience and hubris:

Laziness: The quality that makes one go to great effort to reduce overall energy expenditure by spending ridiculous amounts of time writing labor-saving programs that other people will find useful; and designing them and documenting them so that they are intuitive (and no one will ask questions).
Impatience: The anger one feels when the computer is being underutilized. This makes one write programs that don't just react to user needs, but actually anticipate them. Or at least seem to....
Hubris: Excessive pride... but also the quality that makes one write (and maintain) programs that other people will like; even better, that others think are impossible.
